About Westman Islands
The Vestmannaeyjar Islands (Vestman Islands) are a collection of 15 bigger islands and smaller islets off Iceland’s southwest coast.
Only Heimaey Island is inhabited all year, and the archipelago now has a population of roughly 4,300 people.
The islands are a particularly active volcanic area. In 1963, the volcano erupted, forming the new island of Surtsey, which is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In 1973, the volcano erupted again, forcing practically the entire population to escape to the mainland and drastically altering the island’s appearance. At the turn of July and August, the legendary music festival takes place on the island of Heimaey.
