About Sauðárkrókur

Sauðárkrókur is the largest city in northwestern Iceland. In 2006 there were 2 606 inhabitants. The geographical coordinates are 65 ° 45 ‘north latitude and 19 ° 38’ west longitude.

The city was named after the nearby river Sauðá. The oldest settlement of the area dates back to the time of the Vikings. Thanks to its advantageous position on the coast, a trading station was located here during the Danish monopoly in Iceland (1602–1787), but most of them were traded illegally. In 1858 the settlement was granted a trading permit and in 1871 the first permanent resident settled here. In 1900 there lived more than 400 inhabitants.

The city is now an important center of trade and services in the area. The main economic sector is fishing, such as dairy or light industry. The services include, for example, information technology and financial or consulting services.

In 2004, a stadium was built here, which is now the seat of the local football club UMF Tindastóll.
