With a height of 128 meters, Hengifoss is Iceland’s third highest waterfall. It’s on Lake Lagarfljót, just outside of Egilstadir. It is reached through a 2.7-kilometer walk that passes several lesser waterfalls along the way. Hengifoss itself is carved out of a rock composed of layers of basalt and red clay. A short further down the Litlanesfoss River, which feeds the Hengifoss, lies an intriguing basalt organ.
A 30-minute hike leads to one of the longest waterfalls (128m) in Iceland. I recommend leaving in the morning to have a lighted waterfall. The waterfall is located in the east of Iceland in the area of Fjlótsdalshreppur.
