About Hella

As a local, who lived in Hella and nearby places almost 3 years, I can recommend you some things and attracations, you can find in or around Hella. But what should be the first reason, why visit Hella in South Iceland? I personally think, it´s location this small village.

Hella can be your first stop, if you start your journey through Iceland. It´s not very far away from famous Golden circle, so after you visit Thingvellir national park, see geysir Strokkur and mighty Gullfoss, you just drive more south and check-in to your accommodation in the evening.

It could seem, there is nothing to do around this spot, but even if you stay in Hella for days, I think you can find satisfying things to do for one or two day trip. Just check our recommended trip´s itinerary in the end of this post.

Best restaurants in Hella

Here you can find a complete list of cafés, restaurants, and buffets.

Even if there are not so many restaurants in this village on South Iceland, we can recommend you good street food vagon open during the summer time, as well as fancy restaurant in nearby hotel Rangá. In the city, you can find 3 classic restaurants. Hotel Stracta offers restaurant in their hotel, the second one is then restaurant Arhús next to river and the last is Kanslarinn, in city centre.

  • Restaurant at Hotel Rangá – best dining experience

Restaurant at Rangá should be your choice, in case you don´t care about the budget and you want to get the best, what Hella offers. You will need to drive outside of the city, probably 10 – 15 mins, but the food worths for it.

  • Restaurant Kanslarinn – best choice in Hella

If you just want to have casual dinner from locals, go to Kanslarinn. You will this restaurant just next to the main road in the centre of the village, just next to hotel Stracta. The prices are affordable and the food respond to icelandic style.

  • Hella street food vagon

I personally fall in love in Surf and turf burger from this “fast food”. Even if they don´t have a big menu, I come back many times. This street food wagon stays during the summer time next to the shops and petrol station, just near to the bus stop station. Unfortunatelly, they are open just hours per day, around the lunch time and in the evening.

Best hotels in Hella

A complete list of hotels, guesthouses, and cottages in Hella.

Hotel Stracta is probably the biggest and also the most visited hotel in Hella, but I would personally always prefer River hotel. Unfortunatelly, this hotel is for now open just during the summer season (june-september), but if you travel in this time, you should definitely enjoy the location just next to river Rangá.

River Hotel – best accommondation in Hella

Located next to the Ranga River, River hotel offers modern accommodations in Hella with impressive nature views.

river hotel hella iceland

Stracta hotel – most favourite one

Stracta hotel is open all the year and have plenty rooms, to accommodate you even in the season. Hotel is located in the centre of the village, close to grocery store and not far away from river.

Loa’s Nest

Loa´s nest is little more private guesthouse, outside of the village. It has really good reviews, renovated interior and nice location. We recommend this guesthouse for groups or tourist, who can book their trip ahead, because this accommodation is selling fast!

Hellatún guesthouse

This guesthouse is 20 mins far away from Hella, so it´s not ideal for tourist, who want to go for a dinner or have grocery store nearby. From the other hand, if you are group of people looking for Northern lights, this should be the spot you are looking for. The rent for apartment with 6 beds can seem little bit pricey, but there is almost no light pollution in that area, you have accommondation in private with hot tubs as a bonus.

Best waterfalls nearby Hella

Urridafoss waterfall

Urridafoss Waterfall is one of the lesser-known waterfalls in southern Iceland, although it is very easy to reach and is just a 2-minute drive from the main road.

If you are a fan of waterfalls, then you should definitely not miss a visit to this waterfall, which is located between Selfoss and Hella.

Ægisíðufoss Waterfall is waterfall near town Hella in southern Iceland.

Arbaejarfoss Waterfall (also know as Arbajarfoss) is “secret” waterfall near town Hella in southern Iceland.

We stayed in Hella and did one day trip driving along with southern coast to ViK with several stops. We also did another day trip to the glacier lagoon/diamond beach. The glacier lagoon takes about 3-4 hours from Hella one way so you might be driving in the night towards the end of the day.

We are staying in Hella and would like to go horseback riding. Any suggestions? We are all beginners. I would also welcome sights/places to eat around Hella. We are already going to do the Golden Circle, Vik, and the glacier lagoon.

Hella is a well-located base to explore the south. Hotel Stracta is nice. The village has a small supermarket, a bakery and a couple of restaurants.

Hella is a functional little town that is similar to most towns along the southern coast. There are some great guest houses near there. Last week we stayed at Fagrabrekka… highly recommend!

Hella’s a lovely area. If you want a lavish dinner, book at the Hotel Ranga nearby. 🙂
